Central Otago is situated in inland of the South Island being two hours drive west of Dunedin and two hours north of Invercargill. Central Otago has very hot dry summers and very cold dry winters with an abundance of lakes and rivers. It is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise: hunting, fishing, tramping, skiing, skating, bungy-jumping, boating, mountain-biking, kayaking and lots more.

The Central Otago Kindergarten Association (COKA) has five kindergartens: two in Queenstown, one in Cromwell and two in Alexandra.

Fundamental Beliefs and Values

  • Our primary focus is education for children
  • Quality programmes should be developed and delivered by qualified, competent early childhood teachers
  • Programmes should reflect the needs and values of parents/whanau within individual kindergarten communities
  • We are committed to the Treaty of Waitangi and bi-cultural partnership of Aotearoa
  • We are committed to being inclusive of all people
  • Access should be for all children within the age range 2-6
  • Cost should be no barrier to participation
  • The organisation should be led and managed in a partnership arrangement between the professional staff and the community
  • Participation should benefit and enrich all those who choose to become involved with the operation and use of the service
  • We should maintain and develop our regional identity.

We believe that:

  • Parents/whanau have a right to share and participate in the kindergarten experience at a level that suits their lifestyle, needs, desires and abilities.
  • The creation and maintenance of a special and precious "individual centre atmosphere" which comes from "the heart" is to be supported.
