Manaia Kindergarten is situated approximately 21 kilometres from Whangarei , above the shore in Parua Bay on the Whangarei Harbour. The catchment area of the kindergarten includes Waikaraka, Manganese Point, Parua Bay, Mt Tiger, Pataua, and the Whangarei Heads Area. This includes children from rural and coastal areas. Although the kindergarten roll reflects Pakeha as the majority attendees, there is also representation of iwi, European and Celtic groups.

Manaia Kindergarten offers quality early childhood education, using the National Early Childhood Curriculum known as Te Whariki to develop its programme and as a basis for ongoing assessment and evaluation.  The kindergarten environment is based on a child centred and resource- based philosophy which enables children to develop at their own levels while utilizing the extensive resources and quality interaction opportunities available to them.

In depth consultation with and commitment from the local community and businesses saw the kindergarten established in under three years; a major achievement by all groups concerned.  This commitment has continued and is reflected in te reo classes held at the kindergarten, local newsletters, and community support of kindergarten activities.

Our centre is considering diversification of services to meet current community needs. This is part of our ongoing consultation and evaluation process and a number of scenarios are being considered with the final outcome positively benefiting the kindergarten community.
